Thousands of Sherpa porters who rely on the Everest trekking industry are now jobless in the face of COVID-19. The global pandemic is spreading quickly throughout Nepal with 42,877 reported cases as of Sep 4th. The Federal Government and some international aid agencies have been focusing their services in urban areas while remote and marginalized communities have been forgotten in Nepal’s less developed mountainous regions. The Sherpa community, in particular, is struggling in the face of a severe food crisis.
This campaign aims to help around 230 students who are the children of Everest tourism families. At this time of high unemployment, these families are not able to pay the fees for their children to attend primary and secondary government schools. With your support, we will be providing these students with school books, stationary, as well as admission and exam fees for a period of one year.
All educational institutions throughout Nepal have been closed since the nationwide lockdown came into effect on March 24th. However, the Federal Government has decided to reopen these facilities soon amidst the pandemic. While still without employment, porter families are extremely concerned about meeting their children’s school expenses and needs as they struggle to meet their basic food needs.
We believe that school children are the leaders of tomorrow and if provided with a strong educational foundation, these leaders can imagine a better tomorrow. It is our humble request that all generous donors from around the world will help support the Sherpa community at this extremely difficult time in all our lives. The Everest Mera Foundation and the Mahakulung Rural Municipality will jointly manage your generosity.
We aim to raise USD 5000 to cover a year educational school expenses of 230 students from Sherpa families. We kindly request you to participate in this campaign by donating your generosity to our official bank account presented below.
